Yeast Donuts at Home!

I wanted to make some donuts at home and have them taste delicious too as there are a few donut lovers in my family! Any day can be donut making day as long as you have some simple ingredients.

Easy Glazed Yeast Donuts

These almost have a Krispy Kreme donut light texture to them and are easy to put

together. You simply have to wait while the dough rises to enjoy these tasty bites perfect for an afternoon coffee treat!

Prep time: 15 minutes
Rise time: 3 hours
Cook time: 10 minutes
Yield: about 16 donuts with 16 donut holes

2/3 cup (150 mL) hot water
1/3 cup (75 mL) granulated sugar, divided
2 1/4 tsp (11 mL) traditional active dry yeast
1/4 cup (60 mL) butter, melted
1 egg
1/2 tsp (2 mL) vanilla
1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
3 cups (750 mL) all purpose flour (approx)

Glaze:
1 cup (250 mL) icing sugar
2 tbsp (30 mL) milk
1/2 tsp (2 mL) vanilla

Cinnamon Sugar:
1/2 cup (125 mL) granulated sugar
1 tsp (5 mL) ground cinnamon (or more to taste)

In a large bowl, add a pinch of the sugar to the water and stir to dissolve. Sprinkle with yeast and let stand for about 10 minutes or until frothy. Stir in butter, egg and vanilla until combined well. Add salt and 2 1/2 cups (625 mL) of the flour to form a ragged dough. Turn out onto floured surface and knead enough of the remaining flour into dough, about 5 minutes until a smooth soft dough forms. Place in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise for about 2 hours or until doubled in size.

Punch down dough gently and roll out on floured surface to a generous 1/2 inch (1 cm) thick round. Using a donut cutter, cut out donuts and holes. Gather dough gently and roll and cut remaining donuts. Alternatively, cut donuts out into squares to not re-roll dough and cut out centres with a small biscuit cutter. Place donuts on floured baking sheet and cover with clean towel or plastic wrap and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.

Meanwhile, prepare deep fryer or deep heavy saucepan halfway filled with oil and bring to 360 to 370 F (185 to 190 C) temperature. Fry donuts a couple at a time for about 2 minutes, turning once until golden brown. Place on cooking rack set over paper towel to drain and repeat with remaining donuts and donut holes.

Glaze: In a bowl, whisk together icing sugar, milk and vanilla. Cinnamon Sugar: In another bowl stir together sugar and cinnamon. Dip one side of donuts into glaze or alternatively roll both sides of donut into cinnamon sugar. This gives you the option to have some of both or all of one!

Enjoy immediately or watch them disappear over the day! Happy Donut Making Day!
