Sweet and Spicy Gochujang Chicken Wings

Weekend Wings!

If you're a family that loves chicken wings, these might be the ones for you to make this weekend! Crispy and tasty out of the oven with a delicious sauce. Not sauce lovers? That's okay too, they are just as tasty without this sauce and kids approved.

Sweet and Spicy Gochujang Chicken Wings

Sometimes making wings at home can be a tasty experience with a crisp finish! These wings did not disappoint anyone, with or without sauce.

4 lb (2 kg) chicken wings (flats and drummettes)
1 tbsp (15 mL) baking powder
1/2 tsp (2 mL) each garlic powder and salt
Pinch pepper

Sweet and Spicy Gochujang Sauce:
1 tbsp (15 mL) sesame oil
1 tsp (5 mL) each grated fresh ginger and garlic
1/4 cup (60 mL) water
3 tbsp (45 mL) packed light brown sugar
2 tbsp (30 mL) gochujang paste
1 tbsp (15 mL) soy sauce

Line a large baking sheet with foil and place a rack into the baking sheet (this will keep the chicken wings crispy). Lightly spray rack with cooking spray; set aside. Preheat oven to 450ºF (220ºC).

Pat chicken wings dry using paper towel and place in a large bowl. Toss with baking powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper to coat evenly.  Place chicken wings on rack so they are not touching each other. Place wings in the oven for 30 minutes.

Sweet and Spicy Gochujang Sauce: Meanwhile, combine sesame oil, ginger and garlic in a microwaveable bowl. Microwave for about 30 seconds or until fragrant. Carefully remove from microwave and whisk in water, sugar, gochujang and soy sauce until smooth; set aside.

Remove wings from oven and turn over all the wings. Return to oven for about 20 minutes or until crispy and golden. Remove from oven and place in a large bowl. Drizzle with some of the sauce and toss well to coat.

For saucier wings, use up all the sauce or serve remaining sauce for dipping the wings into.

Serves 4.

Tip: You can find gochujang chili paste in the international aisle of most large grocery stores or look for it in Asian grocery stores or online.

I found 4 lb (2 kg) of chicken wings filled the rack, so if you have more you might have to use another baking sheet and rack. I use my cooling rack that I use for cookies for this.

Having the baking sheet wrapped in foil helps with clean up of the baking sheet.
